Compost bin extension detailed ahead of Vernon household pickup – Lake Country Calendar

Vernon Council has floated some ideas to extend the full compost bin program until household organics collection begins, as planned, in May.

The Council supported the extension of the program at its regular meeting on February 14, providing a bin at a central location for those who will not have door-to-door collection.

At the time, the council discussed the need for a bin placed near the compost bins to reduce contamination from plastic waste and the bins.

Service provider Spa Hills told the city that there was “very little plastic contamination in the bins and any present is removed when the organics are dumped (at their facility)”.

“Additionally, placing a trash can with the compost bin may increase illegal dumping at the site of the organics bin,” Laurie Cordell, the city’s long-range planning and sustainability manager, said in a report. to the council.

Staff do not recommend placing a garbage can with the organics bin.

The central location suggested for the short extension was the Vernon Recreation Center but the council discussed whether the Schubert Center or Kin Racecourse might be more suitable.

“All community bins are being well used,” Cordell said. “The program previously had a ferry behind the Schubert Center but it was withdrawn at the request of the center and its neighbours. There have been no other requests for a bin at this location.

A partnership with the Vernon School District was also canceled by staff.

“The program has not supported schools with their biological diversion to date,” Cordell said. “The bins have been placed to avoid school sites so as not to attract additional traffic to schools.”

The North Okanagan Regional District, Cordell said, is currently considering implementing an institutional, commercial and industrial organics ban that would require schools to address the diversion of organics.

Cordell’s report was received unanimously by the board. The location of a central bin will be determined at a later meeting.
